favorite things i want to remember from this weekend:

morning walks with mikey to the treehouse, hand in hand
very definitely feeling baby m4 move
"hallelujah" in central park
a carousel ride for 4
standing at the base of the freedom tower, remembering
sweet summer strawberries at the farmers market
paperbacks, a field jacket & a monstrous american flag | souvenirs
eating dinner(s) at 10 pm
sleeping until 10am
plans for future travel together, browns + martins

one of my favorite things from our ny trip was meandering through the farmers market on saturday. everything screamed of summer - from the vibrant red tomatoes to the sweetest tasting strawberries, from the tart cranberry walnut pastry to the gingersnap that we all shared. i always love walking stall to stall, whether in new york or south carolina, taking in the sights and smells, welcoming summer in all her glory with arms wide open.

after our morning at the market we strolled over to the shake shack, a new york must, for a kickin' chicken sandwich + fries (us), burgers, fries & shakes (them).

sunday morning after donuts we hopped a train to check out the brooklyn flea. mike and i strolled, hand in hand, weaving in and out of booths. we perused vintage mlb jerseys, letter blocks, army soldiers and toy cars. mikey tried on glasses and i lingered on a couch that i just couldn't figure out how to get home. in the end, mikey came home with a genuine european field jacket from Front General Store and i came home with a vintage American flag for our wall. i have to confess that there's not much better in the world than an easy morning thumbing through other people's treasures with my boy.

mikey and i just got back from sneaking away for a long holiday weekend to visit chris & alexa in nyc. we walked for miles, exploring pockets of manhattan & brooklyn, central park & the sunday farmers market. our hosts took us on the most fabulous food tour of the city ... we dined on italian (supper) and thai (land thai), breakfasted on bagel sandwiches, funky donuts (the blood orange doughflower was my favorite) and massive cinnamon rolls, and shared plates at maison pickle. we even managed to snag pie at four & twenty blackbirds late one afternoon. we rode the carousel in central park and picked through the brooklyn flea, scoring treasures and keepsakes that'll be in our family forever (him: a genuine european field jacket / her: a massive american flag for our wall). mikey also came home with several new paperbacks; he's currently into hemingway. we talked of dreams and life, things present and future. we made plans to globe trot together, all kiddos in tow.

mikey & i always suggest a weekend a way from kiddos to just be together. we're thankful for family to keep our boys so we can do it. seriously, i don't even think they missed us. we're thankful for dear friends who'll play tour guide over their long weekend, who'll share their favorite spots and dreams with us.

This past weekend at the lake was just what we needed. Mike and I (and Mimi and Papa too) have been pulling late nights at the white house (and some very early mornings for Mikey) trying our best to hit a target move-in date of July 1 ...

We ate, slept, swam, tattooed the boys, watched movies, picked out some finishing touches for the house (tile & light fixtures) and left feeling energized and refreshed. We also got to celebrate Hayden's FIRST birthday on Saturday (more on that soon)! We're so thankful for a few days together at one of our very favorite spots to catch some much needed rest (whatever that is with 3 small kids) & family time in one of the craziest / busiest seasons we've had since we've been married.

And, as we're nearing the finish of our work on the white house (I guess "finish" is relative) we're constantly remembering Wayne & his family. One day soon when I have time to really sit down and organize pictures & thoughts we'll share what we've been up to! (:
